Last week, I found myself in awe as I joined the families of 200 other individuals to witness a moment that transcended earthly experiences.
My father’s ashes, along with the DNA of historical figures and beloved personalities, are now embarked on an extraordinary journey into the cosmos aboard the Vulcan Rocket — aptly named after the Vulcan homeland in “Star Trek”, adding a unique connection to the iconic film series, and the ancient Roman god of fire.
Robert Chapman, my father, shares space with the DNA of George Washington, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy, as well as the ashes of the legendary special effects artist Douglas Trumbull. The company he keeps is nothing short of legendary, including “Star Trek” icons Nichelle “Uhura” Nichols, James “Scotty” Doohan, DeForest “Bones” Kelley, and the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry. Additionally, Apollo Era astronaut Philip Chapman accompanies him on this celestial voyage.
The Vulcan Centaur, a heavy-lift launch vehicle developed by United Launch Alliance, serves as the vessel for this remarkable mission. Beyond its significant role in sending the private Peregrine moon lander towards Earth’s nearest neighbour, the Vulcan Centaur also symbolises our readiness for future space endeavours, carrying the remains and DNA of our loved ones into the vastness of deep space.
This historic mission lifted off on Monday, Jan. 8, from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida — a date that holds special significance for my family. Alongside my mother and sister, I witnessed our first-ever launch — a moment that means the world to us and would have undoubtedly blown my Dad’s mind.
But our involvement in this historic launch goes beyond mere observation. Impel Talent proudly sponsored a documentary celebrating this extraordinary event. In the coming days/weeks, I’ll be sharing exclusive behind-the-scenes content of the launch, providing a glimpse into the making of this momentous occasion.
“So long, and thanks for all the fish,” a playful nod to my father, resonates with heartfelt gratitude. The experience of witnessing the launch and bidding farewell was a blessing beyond measure. The Vulcan Rocket’s ascent and the Enterprise Mission’s commencement were absolutely breathtaking.
The stress and anticipation during the delayed launch date impacted me far more profoundly than I could have anticipated. This weight lifted as I saw the rocket and my father embark on his mission into deep space, an experience and feeling unlike anything I have ever known.
As I reflect on these last few days, I feel truly blessed for the chance to witness not only a rocket launch but an event that transcends the ordinary and connects us to the cosmos in a way that words can scarcely capture. The Enterprise Mission has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I look forward to sharing more of this celestial journey with you in the coming days. Stay tuned for the behind-the-scenes content, and thank you for being part of this extraordinary moment in history.
