With a background in Higher Hotel Management and a dynamic journey in recruitment since 2014, Maximiliaan has forged a unique approach, implementing his commitment to high service levels within the pharmaceutical industry.

We sat down with Max to delve into his motivations for joining Impel Talent, his plans for the future, and his insights into the current market conditions in the Netherlands.
In our conversation with Maximiliaan, we explored the driving force behind his decision to join Impel Talent.
Why did you join Impel Talent?
“I felt I was missing a bit of purpose after a while and wanted to build something of my own. I felt like I owed it to myself and my family to build a real business of which I’m proud. I was introduced to Nathaniel by someone who said our thoughts and ambitions align very well. After a few chats, we discovered that the business I wanted to build was something Nathaniel wanted to expand upon, so we decided to join forces and build the business together. We thought about the setup of me joining forces with Impel and with me starting my own business and figured out the setup.
The reason I am joining Impel is the sense of purpose everyone has for doing better and the genuine drive to impact people’s lives in a positive way. The unique combination of Recruitment with Leadership & Development, and Coaching by people from within the industry gives Impel a strong advantage and gives candidates a way of becoming better at their work and as a person in general. Impel is unique in how it operates, and I am happy to have made the step to become a partner in the business.”
What do you love about your role?
“From this month onwards, I will be starting as Director Contract and Interim for the EMEA region for the business units Renewable Energy, Space & Technology, and Life Sciences. Next to that, I will be a co-founder of the European subsidiary and join the Executive leadership team. This gives me the opportunity to build an amazing business together with the other leaders and impact people inside and outside the business in a positive way. I am very excited to take on this challenge and drive the success of the business even further with the whole Impel team.“
How did you get into rectuitment?
“To be honest, it was a coincidence, as many other recruiters will agree. I don’t think anyone in school chooses to go into recruitment – it just happens. I got into contact with my previous work through a friend and thought I should check it out. The company was based in the financial district of Amsterdam, and I like the ambiance of the whole area. When they gave me the chance, I took it with both hands and found out I was pretty good at it, so I continued to push forward, and the rest is history.“
What are you passionate about?
“I first started my recruitment journey in 2014 as an associate consultant for the pharmaceutical industry. I quickly discovered that the industry sometimes had a bad name and thought this could be done differently. With my background in hotel management, I have always attained a high level of service, and during my years in recruitment, I implemented that same service towards my clients and candidates. This resulted in a strong relationship between all parties involved, which drove me to improve the business more and more. I feel there is still a lot to be improved, which drives me. To make recruitment a bit better day by day.“
Why launch an office in the Netherlands? What are the prospects?
“The reason we are launching the Dutch office as a subsidiary for Europe is due to the changing market conditions that we see in all sectors we operate in. Last year was tough for businesses, but we see a return in trust in the economic climate, and companies are willing to invest and grow again. Because of the uplift in European market conditions, it’s only logical to have a base of operations on which we can expand. This is a great first step in building out this part of the business, and the Dutch office will operate as the contract’s hub for the global markets as well. A very exciting step!“
What is one piece of advice you wish you could tell yourself 10 years ago?
“Invest more in yourself, invest more in property and business, and don’t party that much. Don’t get me wrong, I still like a drink and party occasionally, but I feel if I had a longer-term mindset, I wouldn’t have wasted so many weekends and dragged on so many weeks. Investing in the future is so important, and I think I could have played my cards smarter if I looked back on it.”
What do you do to relax and unwind outside of work?
“To be honest, I’m a huge nerd and love computer games. I have a lovely family with whom I spend a lot of quality time, and I try to attend the gym at least four times a week. I am also passionate about good food, so I often go out for dinner. I love to cook, so I try to spoil the family with some good homemade meals. Work is crazy enough, so I try to take it easy outside of working hours and chill as much as possible.“
